Stöðvarfjörður is the only village in the Eastfjords of Iceland that Route 1 runs through and it has a number of interesting sights. The fishing industry is the main industry as well as tourist services. Arts and crafts are prominent here and a tangible result of the creative forces of Stöðvarfjörður, probably inspired by the magnificent natural wonders of the area. Stöðvarfjörður is part of the municipality Fjarðabyggð.
Stöðvarfjörður has a preschool as well as an elementary school. The school and Breiðdalsskóli school were combined in 2019. The unified school has since been named after both districts and students travel between locations every other day except Friday when the school is operated in both locations. Approx. 25 children at a preschool and elementary school age live in Stöðvarfjörður. The Music School of Fáskrúðsfjörður, Stöðvarfjörður and Breiðdalsvík is housed in Breiðdalsvík.

A number of businesses are operated in town, e.g., a shipping company, a fish processing plant, a mechanical workshop, a yoga teacher and a health coach.
The town has a church with great acoustics and a nice congregation hall. A seniors’ daycare is operated twice a week at Balaborg. It offers senior citizens a hot meal for lunch once a week and afternoon refreshments once a week. It is also a place to play games, do crafts and more.
Stöðvarfjörður has an outdoor pool open in summer, a small football area operated by KSÍ and a sports center with a gym.
A campsite can be found at the outskirts of the village, close to Nýgræðingur, a small forestry plot with pathways.

Stöðvarfjörður has two restaurants, one of which is open all year round. There’s a small giftshop and grocery store that sells essentials to locals and tourists. Accommodation is available with one hotel and a few smaller inns in the area.
Landsbankinn bank operates an ATM in Stöðvarfjörður and postal services and transportation of goods are available without permanent branches of the service companies. There is a healthcare in town and a doctor and nurse are in attendance every other week. A small pharmacy branch is operated in town which has prescription medicine services.
Stöðvarfjörður is home to a famous rock collection, an art gallery and a local museum. A large arts and crafts market is operated in summer, offering arts and crafts by locals. There’s also a creative center in the old freezing plant. The center is home to one of Iceland’s best sound studios, Studio Silo, frequented by Icelandic and foreign creative artists.
