The long and narrow fjord of Seyðisfjörður loops between the majestic Bjólfur and Strandartindur. At the bottom of the fjord sits the town of Seyðisfjörður, nestled at the root of the mountains Bjólfur (1085m) and Strandartindur (1010m). The town is known for its relaxed atmosphere, its numerous cultural events, diverse community and unique natural beauty which is also a great venue for endless outdoor activities.
The center of town is characterized by colorful wooden houses that are quite rare in Iceland and Seyðisfjörður is known for this unique cluster of Norwegian houses from around 1900. The center has a number of shops, unique cuisine options and that characteristic bohemian atmosphere of Seyðisfjörður. Inhabitants at the beginning of 2022 were 685.
The elementary school now has approx. 60 students and the preschool approx. 30 children. The preschool is for ages 1 and up. Seyðisfjarðaskóli school is a jointly run school with a multiform arts department, an elementary school and preschool. The school is housed in three buildings. www.seydisfjardarskoli.is

Síldarvinnslan herring factory operates white fish processing, rendering and a trawler that unloads at the factory. Passenger and car ferry Norröna sails weekly all year round between Thorshavn in the Faroe Islands, Seyðisfjörður and Hirtshalls in Denmark. The ferry comes with various operations and Smyril Line operates services at Seyðisfjörður for both passengers and cargo. The harbor at Seyðisfjörður is one of Iceland’s best harbors in terms of depth and natural shelter from the weather. It is home to Iceland’s only passenger terminal, two wharfs of 7m and 10m and a well-equipped customs service. The harbor often welcomes cruise ships and in recent years the number of ships and passengers have multiplied. 70 ships are booked at the harbor in summer 2022.
A number of businesses have branches in Seyðisfjörður, including an engineering firm, accounting services, a translation center, Austurbrú, the District Commissioner of East Iceland and the Directorate of Customs. There’s also a hair salon, history atlas website Sagnabrunnur, Skálanes Nature and Heritage Centre, Orteka importers and various small industries.
Seyðisfjörður is home to Huginn sports club, which has a robust operation in the area. The sports center has a gymnasium, a sauna, a hot tub and a gym as well as clubhouse facilities. An indoor pool with a sauna and hot tubs can be found in the area as well as a playground, a jumping pillow, a small football area and playground equipment for children.
The municipality’s offices can be found in the old central telephone office at Hafnargata 44, a historical house built by Otto Wathne, commonly referred to as the founding father of Seyðisfjörður.
The Blue church and Rainbow street
The town has a grocery store from the Kjörbúðin chain which is open every day, all year round. Additionaly, the town has a pharmacy, gas pumps and a liquor store. A doctor, a midwife and a nurse work at the health care center and a dentist has weekly attendance. A special Alzheimer’s ward is operated by HSA at the health care center. The town has a number of small shops (more open over the summer) and various accommodation options. All kinds of activities are available for tourists, operated with the arrivals of cruise ships, a small bus company and guides. Seyðisfjörður also has a steel workshop, sandblasting shop, contractors and various small industrial operations. The town also has a few restaurants.
The Technical Museum of East Iceland can be found in town, there’s a number of marked trails in the fjord as well as between fjords and up mountain tops. A priest lives in Seyðisfjörður and Seyðisfjarðarkirkja church, which has a very nice congregation hall, is used for all church activities as well as the Blue Church concert series which takes place in summer.
Trout can be found in Fjarðará river in late summer and fishing permits can be purchased at Alda Hotel.
Center for visual art
Seyðisfjörður has a rich and happening cultural life. There’s Skaftfell, a center for visual arts in East Iceland which has a flower shop, a gallery, an artist workshop and bistro. The town is home to “Heima” art residency where a number of artists have stayed, both short term and long term.
Seyðisfjörður is home to Iceland’s first folk high school (LungA School) since 2013. LungA is an international school and came to be from the art festival LungA, a weeklong international art festival that’s been held annually since 2000. Other annual events include winter and sun festival Art in the Light (List í ljósi), an annual outdoor festival held in February, Smiðjuhátíð Festival, an annual festival of the Technical Museum, autumn festival Haustroði, Blue Church concert series and other events that lure guests and tourists that eventually add flair and character to this town.
Herðubreið community center has been restored and offers various activities all year round and will soon see facilities for innovations and entrepreneurs. It is also home to the only cinema in a large area, from Akureyri in the North to Selfoss in the South.
