Austurland

The Austurland region measures 15,792 sq km, made up of 4 four municipalities (Fjarðabyggð, Fljótsdalshreppur, Múlaþing and Vopnafjarðarhreppur) and a population of 11,200. That equates to just 1.4 people per sq km.

That means there’s plenty of room for big ideas here, and fresh air to feed imaginations. Across our 13 welcoming communities, people are connected, resourceful, and inspired to create big things from small beginnings.

We make food, art, energy and more. You may know about our tourism and fishing industries, but we offer plenty of surprises too – from fresh wasabi grown using geothermal water, to Iceland’s largest forest (who says there are no trees in Iceland?!).

Business opportunities abound here, alongside our head-turning landscapes and enviable lifestyle. Come see for yourself.
